The Beauty of Ugly: We may think we know what is beautiful and what isn’t, but in the natural world, beauty can be many things – including what we might find completely repulsive.
If you look like a colorful blob of mold, if you’re long and slimy, if your face looks like a shovel, or you have tusks growing into your head, if you are the owner of a pendulous nose, enormous buck teeth, a fat body, or have tentacles on your face, someone will love you just the way you are.
And not only can the bizarre be attractive, it can also provide just the edge a creature needs to succeed in a difficult environment. From frogfish and hagfish to naked mole rats and elephant seals, from vultures and warthogs to proboscis monkeys and the ugliest bug in Oklahoma, we learn how and why ugly can be beautiful, even when it isn’t pretty.
The Silence of the Bees: Honeybees from the beginning have played a key role in human survival. Most fruit trees and vegetable species are entirely dependent on bees to produce, and there's no artificial replacement for natural pollination. But the bees are disappearing. Massive die-offs, first reported in November 2006, are now the subject of international emergency research as scientists race to discover the cause of this ecological disaster. Could it be a disease? Is it caused by pesticides, genetically modified foods or radiation from cell phone towers? Whatever is happening, we must solve the mystery and correct the problem soon or face unimaginable consequences.
In the Valley of the Wolves: The Druids are the most celebrated wolf pack in North America. For almost a decade, they have held the Lamar Valley in northern Yellowstone. The valley is prime winter grazing for thousands of elk and thus the most coveted wolf country in all the Park.
Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Bob Landis has chronicled the adventures of the Druids since their very beginnings and in this, his third film on the wolves, the Druids find themselves in trouble for the very first time. After reaching the astonishing number of 37 members, the largest wolf-pack on record, the Druids begin to decline. Their leaders are failing with age and new packs are crossing their borders looking to claim the valley. This is the three-year story of the fall and rise of the most famous wolves in America, their battles against rival wolves to hold on to their beautiful range, the dramatic twists in fortune that banish them from their valley, and the perseverance and devotion that bring them home at last.
