"She's got people talking!" That's what everyone says about Ros Pritchard, a supermarket manager and a middle-class wife and mother who ignites a political firestorm with her improbable candidacy for Parliament. Running on little more than charm, honesty, and common sense, Mrs. Pritchard and her Purple Alliance party shock the pundits and sweep to victory. But can the political novice actually govern as Prime Minister and still stick to her principles?
Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous) delivers a warm, winning performance as an ordinary woman who goes to extraordinary lengths to reinvigorate the political process. She recruits allies in the loo. She challenges her constituents to assume more responsibility. And she struggles to keep a rein on her rambunctious daughters. Never shrinking from complex issues, The Amazing Mrs Pritchard takes a bold, unflinching look at the modern political process-and the toll it takes on our leaders and their loved ones.
Disc 1
Episode 1: "I could do better than you lot!" So says supermarket manager Ros Pritchard after two MP candidates get into a fistfight outside her store. Launching her own impromptu campaign, Ros captures the public's imagination and wins surprising political allies. As Election Day approaches, support for her Purple Alliance snowballs everywhere-everywhere, that is, except in her own household.
Episode 2: To curtsy or not to curtsy? That is the question as the Prime Minister-elect prepares to meet the Queen and form a new government. Almost immediately, however, the decisions turn far more serious as Ros faces an international crisis and her own self-doubts.
Episode 3: Mrs. Pritchard's radical proposal to move government out of London meets stern opposition within her own cabinet. Meanwhile, a controversial new book-obviously based on inside information-disparages her leadership and family life. And elder daughter Emily makes revelations of an even more embarrassing nature, posing bum-bared for a ladies magazine.
Disc 2
Episode 4: An airliner explodes over London, killing all aboard and devastating a northeast neighborhood. An act of terrorism, or something else entirely? As investigators grope for answers, a scandal threatens Mrs. Pritchard's credibility: a disgraced junior minister reveals the real reason why some MPs defected to the Purple Alliance in the last election.
Episode 5: Appalled by the G8 leaders' recalcitrance on global warming, Ros impulsively announces mandatory car-free Wednesdays. The outcry over her plan threatens the outcome of a critical by-election. More important, however, the sword of Damocles hanging over Mrs. Pritchard finally falls, as Emily spills her father's long-held secret.
Episode 6: The magnitude of her dilemma becomes heartbreakingly clear to Ros. Should she tell the public all, risking her political career and her marriage? Or should she remain silent, compromising her own principles and violating her promise never to lie to her public? Her answer will ultimately define her-as both a woman and a world leader.
